In January we gathered for our first virtual Lunch + Learn event, which is an on-going series aimed at providing professional development with a rotation of hard and soft skills.

Senior UX Designer, Matt Dabrowiak, facilitated our session on Figma and provided rationale for adopting (and best practices for using) this collaborative, cloud-based platform. If you missed this session, HERE’s a link to the recording!

Next up, Adobe Acrobat Best Practices in March. Calendar invites and details coming soon.

Catherine’s art and expression:

My life as an artist spans various forms of expression, from abstract paintings to sculptures, photography and even jewelry. I’ve practiced photography since early high school, and it became a significant part of my life early on. Right now, I have a window open on my screen that's full of photographs from my last trip to Antarctica.

This desire to create, I think, comes from a feeling of wanting to grow as a person, to become more and more authentic. Abstract art, especially, invites the viewer to feel whatever is true for them, without instruction or judgment. There’s a moment when I begin a new painting where it becomes this relationship or conversation that goes back and forth and eventually produces a sort of gesture, an offer. As I’m working, I may wait for the piece to tell me what the next mark should be in the gesture. Then at some point the piece simply tells me it’s done.

Catherine on growing up among the wildlife:

Ever since I was a tiny child, I’ve found wildlife and birds to be so interesting. Picture a tiny Catherine, much to my mother's surprise, happily coming into the house with a pocket full of worms. You could so often find me just sort of sitting quietly watching what the birds or squirrels might be doing.

I actually ended up going to graduate school in Upstate New York to become a wildlife biologist… until the harsh winters made me rethink that choice. But what I still gained, through that scientific work, was the ability to clearly communicate an idea in an interesting way. I think I’ve managed to keep that part my life.

Thanks to those who were able attend our Holiday party at The Valiant Ballroom, a speakeasy-style venue (accessed literally, through a secret closet at the back of a vintage shop in Vancouver). It was a fun party! There were tarot card readings, a mulling magician with tricks Kari is still talking about, and festive food and drinks. Enjoy these photos from the party!
